As password managers are supposed to be programs that make life easier, it might seem counterintuitive to some to add a whole bunch of extra steps to add some functionality that other software, like Bitwarden, have built in out of the box. However, there’s the question of whether adding plugins is something you actually want to do in the first place.

In most cases, adding a plugin is pretty easy on KeePass: You can download and unpack the file into the KeePass directory, and then add the plugin via the menu in the main KeePass client, although some plugins may require additional steps. The KeePass community is extremely active and offers all kinds of plugins, including ones that can add autofill and automatic sync, so you could just add that functionality that way.

These are extensions of the program that add a specific function to KeePass or even run it on Android devices, iPhones, and iPads.

Whereas Bitwarden is a program that’s put out by a company, much of KeePass’s functionality outside of the base software is provided by its community through plugins.

However, KeePass has an ace up its sleeve in the form of its plugins. Bitwarden does this automatically (and with credit card and ID numbers, too), while KeePass makes you transfer the file with your passwords manually.Īutofill and sync are some of the handiest features that a password manager can have, and it’s hard to recommend any program that’s lacking one, let alone both.

Any account that you create on your laptop, you can autofill on your smartphone, for example. It’s what elevates password managers from being merely useful to being time-savers: Not only do you not need to remember passwords, you also don’t need to type them out.Īutomatic sync (short for “synchronization”) is when you can use the same program on different devices (like your laptop and smartphone) and have the information automatically transferred between them. Besides being easier on the eyes, Bitwarden is also easier to use thanks to having web browser autofill and built-in automatic sync.Īutofill is the very handy ability to have your password manager automatically fill in the username and password fields on any website that you want to access. But this is even more a workaround than the one for the previous point.The differences between KeePass and Bitwarden run more than skin-deep, of course. This can also be workarounded by using dedicated cloud account just for keepass. There are always keyloggers, but there's only so much you can do to defend yourself. So it avoids the problem of one password leaked entirely, at least leaked in a persistent on-harddrive manner. Keepass has this case solved very elegantly: you can tell it to download database from WebDAV, remember the password and then it'll store the password encrypted with database master password (as far as I know). And cloud credentials are one of those things for which you'd rather have a password you remember because well, you need them to access keepass database for one. And this is problem number two - in case I change my job and forget to disconnect cloud client before I return my equipment, I can consider my cloud credentials leaked, because I bet it's stored either in plaintext or not too hard to reverse encryption. For convenience reasons I'd rather have nextcloud client remember my password.This can be workarounded by putting keepass database in a dedicated folder. However I'd rather avoid downloading my personal files on my work PC. And nextcloud client will let me only sync entire folders, not single files (I imagnine other cloud clients work in a similar fashion). Keepass is not the only thing I keep on my nextcloud drive.There are two problems with this approach Fortunately unlike I do have admin access there so I can install, in my case, nextcloud client and be happy with the result. I'll also share my use case in case you guys reconsider.
